Back in 2020, when everyone was stuck at home, I started writing on Medium. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Writing on Medium has helped me:

  • Grow my writing skills
  • Escape a job that I hated
  • Land a job that I love
  • Make extra money

As I approach my four-year anniversary of writing on this platform, I wanted to take a minute to brain dump everything I’ve learned about how to thrive here.

Admittedly, it’s a semi-random list, written in bullet points, and loosely organized by topic. Hopefully there’s something for everyone here.

Let’s dive in!

Writing and Content Creation Techniques

Writing is a skill that anyone can learn. Yes, some people are more naturally talented at it than others, but everyone can improve their skills.

Here’s what I’ve learned about growing and standing out on Medium as a writer.

  • Writing consistently is the key to becoming a better writer.
  • Your best performing posts will always come as a surprise.
  • It’s okay to imitate your favorite writers, but eventually, combine your favorite elements of their writing to make your style original.
  • The best writing usually comes from experience.
  • Everything that happens in a writer’s life is fuel for content.
  • Writing something for everyone means you’ll attract no one.
  • If you want to become a better writer, do two things: read more and write more.
  • Learning good editing skills like removing filler words and fixing buried ledes will 10x the quality of your writing.

Making the most of Medium

Medium is a platform, and like all platforms, it changes constantly. While it’s probably no longer possible to get hundreds of thousands of views on a single piece of writing, you can still benefit as a writer.
