I’m obsessed with great storytelling.

Because of this, I’ve spent years studying what makes a great story (as well as writing a few of my own).

Storytelling as a discipline is currently having its moment in the content creation and marketing world. There are many reasons for this, but it comes down to how becoming a better storyteller will help you connect with others.

You don’t need to be a fiction writer to benefit from improving your storytelling technique.

For example, bestselling authors Ryan Holiday and Robert Greene both weave stories of historical figures into their books. There are numerous other writers who do this well, too.

Today, I want to share some of my best storytelling techniques with you. Here are 5 qualities of great storytellers and how you can implement them.

1. Learn Your Audience Inside Out

Imagine you’re at a party, chatting it up with a group of your college friends. You’d probably share different stories with them than you would your grandma, right?

The same principle applies to your storytelling.
