Look for the signs
Most people are lost in the daily grind of life.
It’s easy to get locked into auto-pilot at cruising altitude. Pretty soon your days turn into years, and you look back and wonder where the time went. You wanted your life to go in a totally different direction. Now you’ve invested a decade with a company that doesn’t know your name, in a relationship that feels dead, or a business that isn’t going anywhere.
You feel like you’ve wasted time you can’t get back.
You might be able to avoid ending up with a life that doesn’t have a lot of meaning to you. The important thing is to recognize the signs and make adjustments along the way.
Try this to avoid a life you don’t want
Everybody is searching for their purpose in life. We’re all trying to find a bigger meaning in the daily battles we fight. We’re trying to hold our lives together while figuring out what we want.
It’s important to know what you want, to have a North Star of sorts. But it’s just as important to know what you don’t want–a South Star if you will.
.When you learn to recognize South Start, you’ll be able to adjust course when your life starts heading in a direction you don’t want.
This is guaranteed to happen to you
No matter where your from, no matter the color of your skin or the amount of money you have in the bank, someone somewhere will hurt you.
You will have to suffer the consequences of someone else’s bad decisions. You will have to deal with the scars left by others who were reckless with your time and attention. You will face disappointment and betrayal, and at that moment you will have a choice. You can choose to work through your hurt, or you can let resentment consume you.
Resentment is like a poison that burns you from the inside out. Once it takes hold, it puts you in a destructive place. Resentment will poison everything good in your life.
A little-known truth about success
Knowing your limitations helps increase your chances of success. Why is that? Because when you know your limitations, you don’t get lost in grandiose dreams.
You may think you can achieve anything if you put in the work, but that kind of grandiosity is a setup for failure. If your self-belief isn’t grounded in some accomplishments from your past, it’s a fantasy. Yes, you can achieve new things. But new accomplishments always require skills gained from past experience.
Robert Greene gives some practical advice on how to know your limits and use practical grandiosity to achieve more in life.
Master this to get where you want to go in life
The things you say to yourself about yourself will either make or break you. Master your mind to eliminate disempowering stories.
You have about 6,000 thoughts per day and most of them are useless. They don’t get you any closer to where you want to be in life. You tell yourself the same disempowering stories every day out of habit.
While everyone is unique, there are some thoughts and stories we all have in common. Learning how to recognize and stop them will help you reach new success.
If you want a better life, tell yourself a better story.
